What’s with the third party syndrome in PH movies?

First, there was “No Other Woman.” Then came “The Mistress”, and now, “A Secret Affair.”

Why do stories about infidelity spring up like mushrooms these days?  What’s with all these moaning and groaning in dark corners while the innocent spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend is not looking? Just as important, why do movies that make peeping toms out of moviegoers make such a killing at the box-office?

Movies being the mirrors of life that they are, the answer is easy: we love being voyeurs.    Another thing is, even the most reclusive of people know of a mistress in their circle.  It’s something a conservative country like the Philippines is teeming with. And it’s grist for the gossip mill.

Psychologist’s view

Showbiz  psychologist Dr. Randy Dellosa thinks films about third parties create emotions so strong, people can’t resist queuing up to cinemas. He thinks there’s something in these movies for everyone.

“Those who have had a first-hand experience of secret affairs in their own relationship  will readily identify with the actress playing the mistress or commiserate with the anguish of the betrayed wife. Those unhappy with their current relationship may be drawn to such movies because of a subconscious wish to engage in secret affairs themselves,” he explains.
To be sure, not all mistresses are the same.  Some are cruel down to their bone marrows.  Others are simply in it for the money. The scenarios are endless.
As the Holy Bible says, judge not, lest ye be judged.
But one thing's sure -- mistresses make interesting characters.  There's never a dull moment with them.  And they're usually sexier, better dressed, even younger than the wife.
So their presence — on screen or off -- are riveting.  Think Anne Curtis ("No Other Woman)" and Andi Eigenmann ("A Secret Affair), whose role as third parties add spice and eye candy to the film.  Besides, when the faces — and the bodies — are these tempting, can moviegoers of both sexes resist?
This is the stuff blockbusters are made of.  So producers cash in on the money back guarantee as if there's no tomorrow.
Take note, too, that mistresses — or a third party --  are so provocative they drive people to drop quotable lines.
Examples:
  • "You know what, ang kasal dapat driver's license lang eh. Renewable every three years.Para pag narealize niyo na ayaw niyo na, hindi niyo na mahal ang isa't-isa you can just quit." (Lovi Poe in "My Neighbor's Wife")

  • "Ang mundo ay isang malaking Quiapo. Maraming snatcher. Maagawan ka. Lumaban ka!" (Carmi Martin in "No Other Woman").

  • "Hindi dahil gusto mo, makukuha mo." (Bea Alonzo in The Mistress)
  • "I'm getting tired of flirting with you. I like you, you like me. Ba't nga ba hindi ko makuha ang gusto ko?" (John Lloyd Cruz in "The Mistress")
  • "Layuan mo ang asawa ko. Tagalog yan para maintindihan mo" (Hilda Koronel in "The Mistress").

  • "(Anne)Masakit talagang masaksak sa likod ng kahit aspile lang ano? (Andie)Sinadya mo ba yun? (Anne) Of course not. Kung sinadya ko yun ice pick ko na ang gagamitin ko." (Anne Curtis and Andie Eigenmann in "A Secret Affair").
  • "Ano bang akala mo sa pambabae? Parang flash floods? Na kapag tumila ang ulan ay huhupa ang baha? Lumikas ka na habang maaga bago mag critical level." (Jaclyn Jose in "A Secret Affair")
Kaya mistress kasi nakaka-stress." (Jaclyn Jose and Anne Curtis in "A Secret Affair")
The list can go on and on.

The third party syndrome — like the action film or bold pictures craze that came before it — will also pass away.  Moviegoers can take only so much.  And the saturation point will one day come.

But that day still seems far off.  For now, moviegoers can't have enough of this third party syndrome.  And producers are only too happy to give them what they want.

Now, who said, "Ano ba tingin mo sa mga lalake?  Bulate? May pa early bird promo? The early bird catches the worm?"

Chiz finally admits relationship with Heart

Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero finally admits that actress Heart Evangelista is his girlfriend.

During his last day as a special “Kris TV” guest co-host, the senator said he and Heart are already a couple, after much prodding from host Kris Aquino.

“We’re seeing each other. As far as I know, she’s not seeing someone else and neither am I,” Chiz said.

To make his statement clear, Kris further asked, “Is Heart Evangelista your girlfriend?”

Chiz then replied, “I would like to think so, yes.”

The senator clarifies that he did not look for love but his new relationship came unexpectedly.

“Hindi ako naghanap. Dumating lang, siguro mas maganda yung ganoon. Kasi may kasabihan na kapag mas lalo mong hinanap, mas lalo mong hindi makikita. At kung hihintayin mong maging handa ka, hindi ring mangyayari iyon. Dumating na lang, hindi inaasahan,” Chiz said.

Chiz finds his relationship with Heart “very refreshing” because they come from different worlds - politics and showbiz. It was Senator Miriam Santiago who introduced them to each other.

“Walang kinalaman sa pinanggalingan ko, sa mundo kong ginagalawan ko ngayon, that’s very refreshing. Mahirap yung kakilala mo lahat. Maganda yung bago, walang kinalaman sa nakaraan mo, wala ka ring kinalaman sa nakaraan niya,” he said.

Chiz also sees Heart as his “sanctuary.”

“Walang kinalaman yung mundo niya sa mundo ko. Kaya kapag tuwing nagkikita kami, parang sanctuary siya. Hindi niya kailangang awayin yung mga umaway sa iyo, hiwalay iyon,” he said.

In a separate interview with Heart, she did not say anything about their relationship, but she said good things about the senator.

“Nakakatawa siya. He’s a very funny person. Pag dating sa mga serious matters, seryoso siya. Pero kapag walang nakatingin, normal siyang tao, very down-to-earth, cowboy,” Heart said.

Leni Robredo eyes Congress seat

Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo, widow of former Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, has answered clamors for her to follow in her late husband's footsteps.

Robredo filed her certificate of candidacy for Camarines Sur third district representative at the local Commission on Elections office, reports on Friday said.

"[K]ami po ng mga anak ko nagulat sa mga pangyayari. Para kaming naitulak sa isang corner na wala kaming choice. Sana divine intervention na yun (My children and I were surprised by this turn of events. It's as if we were caught in a corner and we had no choice. I hope that was divine intervention)," Robredo said in a press briefing broadcast over the radio.

Supporters flocked to their Naga City home Friday morning, most of them tearful as they urged her to seek Rep. Luis Villafuerte Sr.'s seat in Congress, she added.

Villafuerte is serving out his last term and will be running for Camarines Sur governor against his grandson Miguel Villafuerte.

"Parang leap of faith na... Kung hindi naman po nagkaroon ng gulo, talaga naman pong hindi ako kandidato (I consider it a leap of faith... Without the confusion, I really wouldn't be running)," the lawyer said.

Reports earlier floated the possibility that Robredo will be pushed to run under the admistration coalition's Senate slate congressional following the highly publicized death of her husband.

Jesse Robredo died in a plane crash off the island of Masbate Aug. 18, along with two pilots.

When she finally decided to run, Robredo she was shocked that supporters have already prepared her certificate of candidacy.

"Pagdating ko, magta-thumbmark na lang ako (When I arrived, I only had to place my thumbmark)," Robredo said.

Robredo also admitted that she was not able to think her decision through thoroughly.

"Talagang binase ko na lang siya sa faith ng supporters namin (I only based it on our supporters' faith)," she said.

"Sana mas maraming oras po para pag-isipan ito (I hope I had more time to think this through)," she said.

Earlier Friday, the Robredo widow posted via her Twitter account: "Can't believe this is happening."

Her eldest daughter Aika replied: "Me also, pero ganda lang (Me also, but it's great!)

Robredo has earlier agreed to head the Liberal Party in Camarines Sur at the prodding of President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and newly appointed Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel "Mar" Roxas.

Actress Daryl Hannah arrested in Keystone pipeline protest

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Actress Daryl Hannah was arrested in Texas on Thursday after she stood in front of an earth-moving machine clearing ground for the construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, her representative said.
The protest took place outside Winnsboro, Texas, about 80 miles east of Dallas, said Hannah's agent, Paul Bassis.
Hannah, 51, a longtime environmental activist, was arrested last year outside the White House in another protest against the pipeline. The Keystone XL pipeline, a project of TransCanada Corp, would ship more than half a million barrels a day of oil sands-derived crude to the Texas Gulf Coast from Canada.
On Thursday, Hannah stood in front of an excavator being used to clear trees and brush in order to build the pipeline, Bassis said. Joining her was the site's property owner, Eleanor Fairchild, 78, whose land was taken by eminent domain for the project, he said.
"Ms. Hannah and Ms. Fairchild were defending Ms. Fairchild's property from eminent domain abuse by TransCanada," Bassis said.
A spokeswoman for the Wood County Sheriff's Office said no officials were available to discuss the incident.
Booking information from the Sheriff's Office said Hannah was held on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest.
A representative for TransCanada could not be reached for comment, but a company statement said the pipeline would be "safe and reliable."
The southern section of the pipeline - the project Hannah was protesting - will take oil from the glutted Cushing, Oklahoma, storage hub to refineries in Texas. President Barack Obama lent his support to the project, which is being built.
But the northern section of the $7.6 billion project, which would take crude across the Canadian border into the United States, was rejected by Obama last year on environmental and water supply grounds about its route through Nebraska.
TransCanada has reapplied to the State Department for approval of the full project. The State Department has jurisdiction because the line would cross a border.
Hannah played the mermaid in the 1984 film "Splash," and also had roles in films such as "Wall Street" and "Blade Runner."

Researchers Unearth Bacterium that Produces Pure Gold

Gold is now being sold at one of its highest rates in years. Wouldn't it be nice if you could figure out a way to make your own gold? Two professors at Michigan State University may have beaten you to it. They have discovered a way to use bacteria to make 99.9% pure gold.
Kazem Kashefi, an assistant professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, and Adam Brown, an associate professor of electronic art and intermedia, created a compact laboratory to conduct their experiment. Brown and Kashefi made the gold by combining the bacterium, Cupriavidus metallidurans, and gold chloride. Gold chloride has no real value and is a toxic chemical liquid found in nature. Once it's added to the bacteria, the bacteria ingest all of the liquid's toxins and waste. Then, over the course of a week, the toxic substance becomes a solid 24-karat gold nugget. There's no word yet on the actual value of the gold that's created in the lab. The researchers believe the magic they created in their compact factory happens in nature all the time without human interference.
Kashefi calls the process they use to create the gold "microbial alchemy" and says that it is "transforming gold from something that has no value into a solid, precious metal that's valuable." The compact factory that the scientific duo used to create the gold is more like an art installation, so much so that they named it "The Great Work of the Metal Lover." The work received honorable mention at the cyber art convention, Prix Ars Electronica, and is on exhibit until October 7.
Unfortunately, do not expect Brown and Kashefi's work to translate into golden nuggets for you. The researchers have said their experiment is not cost-effective enough to repeat on a large scale.

Homeless Billionaire Nicolas Berggruen Chooses To Live Simply

Posted: October 3, 2012
Homeless Billionaire Prefers To Live Without Worldly Possessions
Nicolas Berggruen is a homeless billionaire, preferring to live a simple life devoid of possessions that others who make the same amount of money as him have in spades.
Berggruen, whose equity firm’s annual revenue is $5 billion, has chosen not to own a home or a car, deciding instead to live from hotel room to hotel room — effectively making him a homeless billionaire, reports EnStarz.
But don’t think that he lives out on the streets, or stays in the local Best Western, as he travels around the world in a jet and only stays at five star hotels.
The multi-billionaire sold his two homes, one in downtown New York City and the other on a private island near Miami, along with his only car, 12 years ago.
Now, the only possessions he has are either in storage, while he just carries his iPhone, a carry on with a few pairs of jeans, a nice suit or two, and a few clean shirts. The homeless billionaire explained his decision by saying:
“Everybody is different and I think that we live in a material world. But for me, possessing things is not that interesting. Living in a grand environment to show myself and others that I have wealth has zero appeal. Whatever I own is temporary, since we’re only here for a short period of time. It’s what we do and produce, it’s our actions, that will last forever. That’s real value.”
The Wall Street Journal notes that Nicolas Berggruen explained his decision by saying that 12 years ago he discovered that he was less and less satisfied with acquiring things, adding:
“First, I don’t need it. Secondly, maybe in a bizarre kind of way, I don’t want to be dependent on it or have the responsibility. I don’t get that much enjoyment out of saying ‘I own it.’ “
The homeless billionaire makes it clear that he has nothing against those who want to enjoy their wealth by purchasing large homes, cars, and other toys. Despite all of the news about rich people and their possessions, it appears that Berggruen’s perspective is becoming increasingly common among today’s superwealthy, who are searching for more meaning in their lives beyond their possessions.
As for what will happen to the homeless billionaire’s money once he’s gone, Nicolas Berggruen states that he has dedicated money towards helping the financial crises in the UK and in the US, and has also donated to charities.

Deep Thoughts With the Homeless Billionaire

Twelve years ago, Nicolas Berggruen sold his apartment, which was filled with French antiques, on the 31st floor of the Pierre Hotel in Manhattan. He said he no longer wanted to be weighed down by physical possessions. He did the same with his Art Deco house on a private island near Miami. From that point on he would be homeless.

Now he keeps what little he owns in storage and travels light, carrying just his iPhone, a few pairs of jeans, a fancy suit or two, and some white monogrammed shirts he wears until they are threadbare. At 51, the diminutive Berggruen is weathered, but still youthful, with unkempt brown hair and stubble. There’s something else he hung on to: his Gulfstream IV. It takes him to cities where he stays in five-star hotels. In London, he checks into Claridge’s. In New York, he’s at the Carlyle Hotel. In Los Angeles, he takes a suite at the Peninsula Beverly Hills.

Photograph by Mark Peckmezian for Bloomberg BusinessweekHis social calendar tends to be full no matter where he is. A dual citizen of Germany and the U.S. who speaks three languages, Berggruen makes a point of having lunch and dinner each day with someone intriguing. It could be an author, a famous artist, or a world leader. He prefers to meet them at restaurants near his hotel. He makes reservations for three even when he only plans to dine with one. That way he doesn’t get stuck at a small table. He leaves room for dessert. He adores chocolate.

In the evening, Berggruen is frequently photographed at parties with attractive women such as British actress Gabriella Wright. “You could easily look at his life and say, ‘Oh, my gosh, he’s always got a pretty girl on his arm. He’s at every party around the world. Is he just a giant playboy?’ ” says his friend Vicky Ward, a contributing editor to Vanity Fair. Maybe. Every year, Berggruen throws a party at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood during Oscar week and invites all his friends. They rub shoulders with Hollywood types such as Paris Hilton, Woody Harrelson, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Berggruen can afford to live like this because he’s chairman of Berggruen Holdings, a New York-based private equity firm that buys troubled companies and fixes them up. Currently it owns more than 30, including an Australian farming operation, a British life insurer, a Portuguese book publisher, a German department store chain, and real estate development projects in Turkey, Israel, India, and Newark, N.J. According to its website, the privately held holding company’s annual revenue is $5 billion. It throws off $250 million in earnings each year. Berggruen’s personal worth is estimated by Bloomberg Markets to be $2.5 billion.

But Berggruen isn’t satisfied with mere wealth and glamour. He also wants to be taken seriously as an intellectual. As the financial crisis unfolded, he became convinced some political systems were failing in America and Europe. He thought he could help rescue them by using his disposable income to advance wonky reforms. By his own admission, he didn’t know much about such matters, but that didn’t stop him.

In 2009 he started the Nicolas Berggruen Institute, a think tank whose stated mission is to improve global governance, and promised to spend more than $100 million to further its goals. In California he’s pushing to overhaul the fiscally troubled state’s tax code, education system, and problematic initiative and referendum system. He would like to see greater political integration in crisis-plagued Europe, preferably under a single leader. He thinks it would be great if the Group of 20 nations become more of a permanent global policymaker.

That’s a large agenda for a balance sheet repairman who only recently began examining such matters. Nevertheless, he got prominent Californians and former world leaders to lend their names to his efforts.

Berggruen will need more than money, charm, and the right names for his think tanks to save the world. His transformation from pleasure seeker to policy guy is a work in progress. Some of his ideas are not exactly made for prime time. For instance, he argues there’s much that Western democracies can learn from autocracies such as Singapore. As he puts it admiringly, the political leaders there really know how to get things done.

“Can I do something really rude?” Berggruen asks in an accent that’s more French than anything else. “I cannot resist. Can I steal a French fry?”
